The ideal sleep environment

Getting your little one’s sleep environment just right for them can sometimes be the make or break adjustment that gets you better sleep. Keep reading to learn about my favorite ways to set up an optimal sleep environment!

Temperature

The most widely suggested temperature range is 68-72 degrees F (20-22 degrees C). However, if you’re comfortable while sleeping, baby likely is too! Dress them similar to how you’re dressed, and remember the sleep sack is like a wearable blanket. In most cases, they’re likely completely comfy.

Darkness

Having a dark room gives a physiological signal to our bodies that it is time to sleep. We all sleep better in the dark. For newborns, even though your baby doesn’t have melatonin or a mature circadian rhythm (until about 11 weeks), keeping nights dark can help them develop this and help with day/night confusion. For older babies, darkness can help limit distractions and encourage longer naps, and better overall sleep because it limits environmental disruptions.

White noise

White noise can be helpful as a signal for your baby that sleep is coming, and it can also help with dampening out environmental or household sounds (like noisy pets or older siblings!).

Basically, keep the sleep environment boring! Keep nap and night time dark and business like. When your baby does wake at night, have a low stimulation routine and get your baby back to sleep as soon as you can!
